AQUARIUM CARE: This species is widespread in Africa, inhabiting lakes and other bodies of water across from Gambia on the far west coast, through central Africa, and to the Nile basin on the east.

In the aquarium the Senegal bichir is quite terratorial to its own kind, but will fit in well in a larger tank with large but peaceful inhabitants. It is carnivorous in the wild, eating insects, small fish and crustaceans, so relishes meaty foods such as beafheart and earthworms.

Fishkeeping Facts and Tips

Well planted aquariums are not only great looking, they are also very beneficial to the fish. They oxygenate the water, absorb nitrates, reduce algae and provide refuge for fry (and other timid species). Plants like Java fern, hornwort, Amazon sword, Vallisneria (eel grass), Cryptocoryne and Anubias can all do well in a typical home aquarium with the smallest amount of attention
